داستان در مورد Dexter Morgan کارشناس تحلیل رد خون (blood spatter pattern analyst) پلیس Miami هست که اوقات فراغتش را با کشتن پر می کند و به روایتی قاتل زنجیره ای (Serial Killer) هست – با انگیزه و هدف مشخص – او فقط کسانی را می کشد که لیاقتش را داشته باشند; قاتل هایی که از دست پلیس فرار کرده اند, متجاوزها و … . پدرخوانده اش Harry Morgan پلیس خوشنامی بوده است که Dexter را هنگامی که سه سال داشته ، در یک صحنه‌ی جرم پیدا می کند و چند وقت هم به فرزندخواندگی قبولش می کند. بعد از مدتی متوجه میشود که Dexter عطش سیری ناپذیری نسبت به خون دارد . برای دورنگه داشتن Dexter از دستگیری و اعدام به او آموزش میدهد که چگونه افراد را بکشد و ردش را از بین ببرد. همچنین به دکستر آموزش میدهد که چگونه تظاهر کند که با باقی آدم ها هیچ فرقی ندارد.

نوع روایت داستان اول شخص هست . در واقع در طول سریال ، Dexter داستان را روایت می کند. البته نسخه‌ی ساخته شده تفاوت هایی با رمان (علی الخصوص در بخش های پایانی) دارد.

تیتراژ آغازین سریال فوق العاده است .
امتیاز در IMDB (در زمان نوشتن این مقاله) ۹/۱ از ۱۰ و در TV.com هم ۹/۱ از ۱۰/

سریال دکستر در سال ۲۰۰۶ در تلویزیون نمایش داده شد .این سریال محصول دو شبکه CBS , Showtime میباشد.
داستان این سریال در باره قاتلی خونسرد و حرفه ای به نام دکستر می باشد که همزمان هم در اداره پلیس مشغول به کار است و هم در زمان مقتضی به قتلهای زنجیرهای خود می پردازد .این قاتل خونسرد دارای ظاهر بسیار ارام و دوست داشتنی است به گونه ای که همه همکارانش او را بسیار دوست می دارند ولی این ظاهر دوست داشتنی پوششی برای پنهان کردن ان چیزی است که سالها در نهاد او وجود داشته و ان چیزی نیست جز اشتیاق به کشتن ولی نه کشتن هر کس بلکه کشتن کسانی که سزاوار مردن هستند . با گذشت زمان با شخصیت و منش و رفتار دکستر اشنا می شویم و با فلش بک هایی به دوران کودکی و نوجوانی او رجعت می کنیم و به علت رفتارهای نامتعارف او پی می بریم. در طول سریال داستانهای جنایی دیگری نیز اتفاق می افتد و از طرفی شاهد زور ازمایی دکستر با قاتلان و جانیان شهر میامی هستیم.
با توجه به اینکه داستان دکستر از روی رمان نوشته شده است شخصیت های داستان بسیار قوی و چند وجهی هستند. شخسیت دکستر فوق العاده است و تماشاگر را تا مرز همزادپنداری با خود می کشاند. طنز تلخی در سریال وجود دارد که بیشتر روی شخصیت دکستر و دیگر همکارانش در اداره پلیس متمرکز است. دکستر بدون شک یکی از بهترین سریالهای در حال پخش است که شاید کمتر از عنصر تعلیق کاذب بهره برده و برتری خود را با ساختار فیلم نامه ای درست و شخصیت های جذاب به رخ کشیده است .
